Fast to Lose Weight – Madness Or Brilliance?

So you want to fast to lose weight. That is understandable; we all want the most rapid, efficient method to lose weight, and if our weight is purely a question of calories in vs. calories out, then it makes perfect sense that fasting is an optimal way to shift the lard.

However, you no doubt find yourself in that bizarre quagmire of contradictory information. Personally, I’m not sold on the ’starvation mode’. Many anorexics, including historical figures such as Lord Byron, have lost substantial weight through severe calorie restriction. Next time somebody throws that card at you, ask them for the scientific citations.

But if you think I would endorse a fast to lose weight, then you’re mistaken.

1. It is genuinely risky for your body. You are willingly short-changing yourself of the nutrients you need.

2. It is one of the least efficient methods of weight loss!

Even if you did decide to fast to lose weight, you would need to go through an enormous amount of physical discomfort and psychological pain in order to achieve it. The other thing to note is that you can achieve rapid weight loss with a number of other methods which are safer, easier, and stand a much better chance of becoming a permanent lifestyle. Why torture yourself when you can achieve the same results, cement them for the long-term, and actually be happy whilst doing it?

Remember that when it comes to weight loss, you are not actually chasing a number on the bathroom scales; you are chasing a feeling. That feeling of slipping on smaller clothes, of feeling light on your feet, of admiring yourself in the mirror, of feeling attractive to the opposite sex, of having that confidence to look people in the eye again, and that psychological liberation as your mind is no longer swamped by body insecurity.

If you fast to lose weight, then you are just hurting your goals. If you can make it that far, then you will be in a slipstream that makes reaching your ideal weight an inevitability.
