The Mayo Diet

The Mayo Diet is gaining some popularity, and I wanted to dedicate some time to understand its effectiveness in weight reduction.  Is the mayo diet a fact, fad, or myth?

Well, let’s see what Wikipedia says about the mayo diet:

“The Mayo Clinic Diet is sometimes used as a name for a diet plan based mainly on eggs, meat and grapefruit. The British Heart Foundation and American Heart Association (among others) warn that these can cause heart problems”.

Being that the Mayo Clinic is a non-profit medical practice, I tend to believe their opinion of the mayo diet…

It’s not only a myth, but the mayo diet may be a dangerous fad, in my opinion.

I’m sure this will continue to cause confusion because numerous versions of the mythical mayo diet have been in circulation for decades.  The Mayo Clinic finally made the official mayo diet available in December 2005.

A Warning About Potential Dangers in the Mayo Diet

When someone decides to go on a diet, then that individual can not safely try just any diet. If that individual is dependent on any sort of medication, then he or she should probably avoid the Mayo diet.

The creators of the Mayo diet have claimed that ingestion of grapefruit supplies the body with an important enzyme. Researchers have now found that the enzyme associated with Mayo Clinic diets does more than assist with the metabolism of ingested food.

Body enzymes, many in the liver, typically catalyze a chemical conversion of ingested medications. If, however, an enzyme manages to alter the blood concentration of a medication, then the doctors have reason to seek the source of that enzyme.

Such a search has shown doctors that an enzyme in grapefruit or grapefruit juice can raise the blood concentration of almost any medication. For patients that depend on certain medications, that fact is important. That fact points-out the potential danger in the Mayo diet.

For the same reason, patients who take insulin for diabetes should stay clear of the Mayo diet.
